Kinesiology Scholarships
The KATHLEEN BROPHY SCHOLARSHIP was established in honor of Kathleen Brophy, retired Professor and Chairperson of Women's Physical Education.
CRITERIA:
- 3.0 GPA based on at least 1 academic year at º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ
- Junior or Senior with at least one term remaining
- Demonstration of Professional Activities
Ìý DITTUS SCHOLARSHIP
The DITTUS SCHOLARSHIP was established by Loren K. and Jo Anne Dittus. Dr. Dittus served as Professor and Associate Dean, College of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER).
CRITERIA:
- 3.0 GPA after 4 semesters/60 semester hours
- Junior
- Demonstration of Extra-Curricular Activities
- Demonstration of Leadership Qualities
- No transfer students eligible
WIX GARNER SCHOLARSHIP
The WIX GARNER SCHOLARSHIP was established in memory of Dr. Charles "Wix" Garner. "Wix" served º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ in the Department of Physical Education from 1937 until his retirement in 1965. He served in many capacities during his tenure at Western; including Director of Athletics on several occasions, and as head football coach, head baseball coach and professor.
CRITERIA:
- 3.0 GPA after completion of 5 semesters and minimum of 75 semester hours
- Attending º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ at least 2 academic years
- Male
- Junior
- Demonstration of Participation and Leadership Qualities in Intercollegiate, Intramural, or Club Sports and/or student activities
WILLIAM HUGHES SCHOLARSHIP
The WILLIAM HUGHES SCHOLARSHIP was established in the Spring of 1982 to honor Bill Hughes, former Professor and Department Chair of Men's Physical Education. Bill Hughes served as Department Chairperson from 1968 until his retirement in 1982.
CRITERIA:
- 3.0 GPA
- 5 semesters completed at º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ
- 60 semester hours completed at º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ
- Plan to graduate from º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ
KINESIOLOGY ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
The KINESIOLOGY ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP was established by funds contributed to the department by interested alumni.
CRITERIA:
- Incoming Freshmen
- ACT Score of 25 or higher
- Declared Kinesiology major
- Demonstrated leadership and/or extra-curricular involvement in high school
Ìý WILLIAM (BILL) LAMBERT KINESIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP
The WILLIAM (BILL) LAMBERT KINESIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP has been established by Dr. Jill Brody to honor her husband, Bill Lambert, a long-time faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology. Bill taught at º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ since 1998. He received his undergrad degree from Loyola Marymount University and his PhD in Physiology and Biophysics from the University of Southern California but spent over half his life in West Central Illinois. Dr. Brody established this scholarship in Bill’s name to celebrate his retirement in a way that so generously benefits future students in the Dept. of Kinesiology.
CRITERIA:
- Applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Kinesiology
- GPA of 3.0 or better
- Financial need is not a consideration
- Preference to a student athlete
- Activity/involvement with the Dept. of Kinesiology and/or the community
WILLIAM L. LAKIE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHI
The WILLIAM L. LAKIE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established by his wife, Mary, and family and friends, in memory of William L. Lakie. Dr. Lakie was Dean of the College of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) from 1971 until his death in April, 1988.
CRITERIA:
- 3.5 GPA
- Graduate student
- Demonstration of Academic Achievement
- Demonstration of Extra-curricular professional activities
- Demonstration of Leadership Qualities in University/Community/Professional Activities
This scholarship rotates between Kinesiology (even years) and Recreation, Park, Tourism, and Hospitality (odd years).
MATTHEW H. MCGUINESS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The MATTHEW H. MCGUINESS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established by Denise Otto McGuinness, in memory of her son, Matthew. Matthew never attended º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ. However, when he was killed in an auto accident in August, 1988 his mother, a 1959 graduate of º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ, established this scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a non-traditional studies program student (generally, a student 25 years or older who started college later in life; or one whose education was interrupted and is now returning to campus to complete his/her degree).
CRITERIA:
- 2.75 GPA after 24 semester hours completed at º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ
- Non-traditional undergraduate student (25 years or older)
- Male
- Evidence of involvement in community
Ìý MARY ELLEN MCKEE SCHOLARSHIP
The MARY ELLEN MCKEE SCHOLARSHIP was established for freshman majoring in Kinesiology. Dr. McKee retired in 1984 after 28 years at º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ in the Physical Education Department.
CRITERIA:
- One female and one male scholarship available for incoming freshmen
- Must have an ACT of 21 or higher or be in top 10% of high school graduating class
- Must have been accepted by º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ at time of application
- Must maintain GPA of 3.0 over a 4-year term and remain in Kinesiology
M. BERNADINE MINGS SCHOLARSHIP
The M. BERNADINE MINGS SCHOLARSHIP was established for M. Bernadine Mings who was º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ's first athletic academic advisor. As a member of the Physical Education faculty and an athletic advisor she was credited with elevating Western's student-athlete graduation rate among the highest of all NCAA institutions. This scholarship, in her name, is intended especially for those student-athletes who are majoring in Kinesiology.
CRITERIA:
- 3.0 GPA
- Junior or Senior Kinesiology Major
- Current student-athlete of º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ athletic team for at least one academic year
- Demonstration of positive personal characteristics with strong leadership qualities, sound work ethics, and eagerness toward life's challenges
PENDERGAST ATHLETIC TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP
The PENDERGAST ATHLETIC TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP was established by family and friends in honor of Michael Pendergast, º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ's longest serving Head Athletic Trainer.
CRITERIA:
- Enrolled in º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ's Athletic Training Program
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Junior or Senior standing
- Preference will be given to a student interested in pursuing a career as an athletic trainer in higher education
DORA SHARP SCHOLARSHIP
The DORA SHARP SCHOLARSHIP was established by Helen Yeast of Sahaurita, Arizona to honor Dora Sharp, Head of Women's Physical Education at º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ. Ms. Sharp came to Western in 1925 and remained until her retirement in 1943. She came to Western because she had always been interested in helping women who were planning to teach Physical Education.
CRITERIA:
- 2.5 GPA
- Junior or Senior
- Female
- Physical Education Teacher Education Major
- Must show promise as a teacher
LOLA "WESTY" WESTENDORF SCHOLARSHIP
The LOLA "WESTY" WESTENDORF SCHOLARSHIP was established in honor of Lola Westendorf, retired professor of Women's Physical Education and assistant and head coach of Women’s Volleyball.
CRITERIA:
- 3.25 GPA based on at least 1 academic year at º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ
- Junior or Senior majoring in Kinesiology
- Active in department activities
- Demonstration of Professional Activities
HELEN MCCUTCHEON YEAST SCHOLARSHIP
The HELEN MCCUTCHEON YEAST SCHOLARSHIP was established by Helen McCutcheon-Yeast. Mrs. McCutcheon-Yeast was "literally raised at Western, first grade through college," graduating in 1935. The scholarship is for transfer students majoring in Physical Education.
CRITERIA:
- Available to incoming transfer students from an Illinois community college
- Must have earned a minimum of 30 semester hours at the community college level
- Cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.0 (on a 4 pt. scale)
- High school and college honors and participation in extra-curricular activities, clubs, and organizations will be considered.
Ìý DR. MARION BLACKINTON KINESIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP
The DR. MARION BLACKINTON KINESIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP was established by Dr. Marion Blackinton to provide financial assistance to a sophomore, junior, or senior º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ student majoring in one of the degree programs offered in the Department of Kinesiology.
CRITERIA:
- Sophomore, Junior, or Senior (30+ credit hours earned)
- Major within the Department of Kinesiology
- Minimum of 3.0 GPA
- Demonstrated financial need
- Preference to a º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ female student athlete
- Activity/involvement within the Department of Kinesiology and/or the community
DONNA S. PHILLIPS SCHOLARSHIP
The DONNA S. PHILLIPS SCHOLARSHIP was established to honor Dr. Phillips and provide financial assistance to a sophomore, junior, or senior º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ student majoring in one of the degree programs offered in the Department of Kinesiology.
CRITERIA:
- Sophomore, Junior or Senior undergraduate student with a major in the Department of Kinesiology.
- Minimum GPA of 2.75
- Student must be engaged in professional organizations or activities within their chosen field (SHAPE, IAHPERD, NATA, NSCA, ACSM, etc.) and/or professional student associations at º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ (ATSA, DES, APEK, ESSA, etc.).
GEORGE HERMANN GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN SPORT MANAGEMENT
The GEORGE HERMANN GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN SPORT MANAGEMENT was established in December 2013 to assist students with financial need.
CRITERIA:
- Graduate standing in Sport Management in the Department of Kinesiology
- Enrolled in classes full time
- 3.0 undergraduate cumulative grade point average
- Demonstrated financial need
