Policy on Employment of Individuals with Disabilities

Section 402 of the 1974 Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act and Section 503 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act require º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ to take affirmative action to employ and advance in employment qualified disabled veterans*, veterans of the Vietnam Era*, and individuals with disabilities**.

Submission of information about a disability is voluntary and information obtained concerning individuals shall be kept confidential, except that

  1. supervisors and managers may be informed regarding necessary accommodations,
  2. first aid and safety personnel may be informed, when and to the extent appropriate, if the condition might require emergency treatment, and
  3. government officials investigating compliance with these Acts shall be informed.

Employees and applicants may provide information about

  1. any special methods, skills and procedures which would qualify them for positions that they might not otherwise be able to perform, and
  2. the accommodations which would enable them to perform the essential functions of a job properly and safely, including special equipment, changes in the physical layout of the job, restructuring of the job, or other accommodations.

* The Act defines Vietnam Era veterans as those who served more than 180 days on active duty between August 1964 and May 1975; a disabled veteran is a person with a 30 percent disability under the Veterans Administration laws.

** The Americans with Disabilities Act defines an individual with a disability as any person who has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more of such person's major life activities, has a record of such impairment, or is regarded as having such an impairment.
